Salma Hayek is the heavenly muse Serendipity who inspires passion, poetry and art . . . when she's in the mood. Hayek arrived in this country as a major television star in Latin America who spoke no English.
Since then, she has accumulated an impressive list of credits.
Hayek made her film debut in Alison Anders' "Mi Vida Loca" and went on to star in Robert Rodriguez's "Desperado," "54," the romantic comedy "Fools Rush In," the Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino collaboration "From Dusk till Dawn," "Fled," "Fair Game,"
"Breaking Up" and most recently, "The Faculty."
Hayek has an extensive slate of forthcoming appearances including Barry Sonnenfeld's "The Wild, Wild West" and "Frida," in which she stars as the Mexican icon Frida Kahlo. She also recently returned to Mexico to star in the Mexican feature "No One Writes
to the Colonel," based on the book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which is in competition at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.
Hayek became a major star in her native Mexico in the extremely popular television series "Teresa" which has been syndicated to over 20 countries. She also starred in the Teatro San Angel production of the Alan Ayckbourn play "Bedroom Farce" which had an
incredibly successful run in Mexico City. Then, at the height of her Latin American career, she moved to the U.S. and started over.
On television, Hayek has had a regular series role on "Sinbad," guest-starred on numerous series and in the Robert Rodriguez film "Roadracers" which aired as part of Showtime's "Rebel Highway" series. She also portrayed the alluring gypsy Esmeralda in
the TNT telefilm "The Hunchback" directed by Peter Medak.
In addition to "No One Writes to the Colonel," Hayek has returned to Mexico to shoot two projects: a historical mini-series, "El Vuelo del Aguila" and the feature film "Midaq Alley" written by the 1998 Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mafouz. The latter won Hayek
a Heraldo Award for Best Actress, an Ariel nomination for Best Actress and rave reviews on the festival circuit, as well as breaking Mexican box office records.
Hayek is also the recipient of the 1998 Nosotros Golden Eagle Award for Outstanding Female Performer in a Film.
